GPMMC #15: Jeffrey (1995)

Summary: In this comedy adapted from Paul Rudnick’s off-Broadway hit play, a young, gay actor/waiter (Steven Weber) finds "Mr. Right" after becoming celibate — a move inspired by his fear of AIDS. Struggling with the notion of commitment after learning his perfect mate is HIV positive, he relies on his best friend (Patrick Stewart, as an interior decorator), and a hilariously lascivious priest (Nathan Lane) to help him find the way.

This has always been one of my favorite movies.  It’s based on a play which I’d love to see.  Also the casting was great.  Star studded and just cheesy goodness.  How can you say no to a movie with Patrick Stewart as a flaming interior decorator?  I don’t have much to say about this movie but that I LOVE it.

Summary: Studly Jarod (Jonathan Chase), nerdy Griff (Mitch Morris), flamboyant Nico (Jonah Blechman) and innocent Andy (Michael Carbonaro) all want the same thing — to lose their virginity — and they’ll paint the town lavender to do so in this gay take on the teen comedy genre. With naughty gags aplenty, there’s lots to laugh at in this send-up that also features Lypsinka as one of the boys’ mothers and a cameo from "Survivor" star Richard Hatch.

I couldn’t help myself in laughing while I was trying to hide from some of the things that happen in this movie.  I had a friend over to watch and he helped to prevent me from hiding.  It was kinda funny.  This movie really felt like it was just a really long sketch for The Big Gay Sketch Show.  I don’t think this is a bad thing, in fact, that what I think makes this movie work.  They do not take themselves seriously at all.  This is actual good camp and I suggest you check it out.

Summary: Based on actual events, director Kimberly Peirce’s powerful, often harrowing drama stars Hilary Swank (in an Oscar-winning performance) as Brandon Teena, a transgender young man searching for love and acceptance in a small Midwestern town. But even as he forges a deep connection with local beauty Lana (Chloë Sevigny), the prejudices of the community threaten to doom the fledgling romance.

Maybe it’s just me but I didn’t feel this was that sad of a movie.  I almost want to say that the ending just went to fast and didn’t pull that hard on my heartstrings.  Oh there was pull, but just a little tug.  I felt for Lana.  However, I did not like Brandon at all.  I thought he was a complete moron for what he did.  Sure, it was nice to see Brandon and Lana get together but for the first part of the movie I was yelling “NO GIRLS!” at the screen.  I don’t think he deserved anything that happened but he just went about it all wrong.  I completely see why it won the awards it one.  It just didn’t get me.

3 Stars with a full recommendation to see it.

Summary: Secret agent Starrbooty (RuPaul) goes undercover as a hooker when her long-standing archrival Annaka Manners (Candis Cayne) kidnaps her niece in this outrageously kitschy comedy featuring plenty of wacky characters, insane costumes and kinky fun. While dealing with the fact that she’s got to go all the way with her johns or risk, er, blowing her cover, Starrbooty learns some startling information about her real identity.

Don’t watch this.  Please, whatever you do, don’t watch this.  Unless you want to see a train-wreck of a movie staring pornstars and dragqueen, then be my guess just to see how bad it is.  It’s so bad, this is pretty much the end of my review.

Summary: In the palm-shaded oasis of West Hollywood, we meet Dennis, a promising photographer. As he prepares to celebrate his twenty-eighth birthday, he laments, ‘ I can’t decide if my friends are the best or worst thing that ever happened to me.’ The gang includes Benji, the punkish innocent with a penchant for gym bodies; Howie, the psychology grad student who thinks too much and lives too little; Cole, the charismatic actor who accidentally keeps stealing everybody’s guy; Patrick, the cynical quipster, and Taylor, resident drama queen, who, until recently, prided himself on his long-term relationship. Providing sage advice and steady work is Jack, the beloved patriarch whose restaurant is a haven for them all.

We’re so going to be talking about this on COL Movies eventually.  I’m almost surprised we haven’t yet.  In any case, this has always been a favorite gay movie of mine.  And not because Dean Cain plays a hot gay man.  That’s just a bonus.  The casting was perfect, the acting was stupendous. The “gayness” of the men were completely authentic.  Not too flamey but not too butch.  I don’t think this completely represents the gay community but it is a comedy so . . . .  Total recommendation and keep watching COL Movies for us to review it.
